Chief Mark Becker Announces Resignation

city_of_portageOn Monday, November 28, 2011, Mayor Elect James Snyder notified Chief Mark Becker of his intentions to initiate interviews for the position of Chief of Police. Mr. Snyder informed Chief Mark Becker that he would not be afforded an interview for the Chief's position. In light of this notification, Chief Becker has submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Olga Velazquez effective at midnight, December 17, 2011.

In preparation for the new chief to be selected, Chief Becker has provided a summary of department activity for the last 4 years, including goals and accomplishments. "Chief Becker has cooperated with the transition team and has provided a professional summary and overview of the progress made under his leadership. On behalf of myself, my family and the citizens of Portage, I would like to thank Chief Becker for his dedication and commitment to public safety and commend him for the many accomplishments that the department realized during his tenure as chief," stated Mayor Velazquez.

Additionally, Chief Becker thanked Mayor Velazquez for her leadership and for the opportunity to have served as Chief of Police. "I thank you and those I worked with for all the support that I have received, and I wish the City of Portage continued success," said Chief Becker.

Assistant Police Chief Larry Jolley will serve as the interim Chief for the remainder of the year.
