Horizon Bank and NIPSCO Gift $25,000 to New Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital
The brand-new Franciscan Health Michigan City hospital received a boost on Friday thanks to two $25,000 gifts from Horizon Bank and NIPSCO. NIPSCO’s gift supports the Dunes Café, which is the hospital’s dining area, while Horizon’s supports the Blessed Maria Theresia Bonzel Community Room. Members of both businesses gathered with Franciscan Health Foundation leadership in that same community room to celebrate the impact of the contributions.
“Through these contributions, we’re able to increase our investment in those two spaces as well as recognize our community partners who are a part of this new journey with us,” said Dean Mazzoni, president, and CEO of Franciscan Health Michigan City. “The Sisters of St. Francis opened their first hospital in Michigan City in 1904. It’s through community support and charitable giving that they were able to make that hospital open. It’s the same thing that we’re seeing with these partnerships here today.”
A focal part of Franciscan Health Foundation’s mission is to never turn away someone in need. The contributions made by NIPSCO and Horizon are early pieces of the foundation of philanthropy needed to support that mission according to Rick Peltier, Executive Director of the Franciscan Health Foundation of Northern Indiana.
“This is not our hospital, it’s the community’s hospital,” Peltier said. “It’s community collaboration in effect today. Horizon Bank and NIPSCO both understand the importance of giving back to their community. Both organizations already have an embedded culture of philanthropy, so we’re proud to have them as partners.”
Headquartered in Michigan City, Horizon Bank shares close ties with the community served by the new hospital.

“The addition of this state-of-the-art facility will greatly benefit local residents, I’ve already been here for services so I can attest to that,” joked Rachel Saxon, President & Senior Trust Officer at Horizon Trust & Investment Management. “It was a natural decision to support this hospital and this community that will serve as a gathering place for families and organizations. We’re more than proud to have partnered with Franciscan, and we look forward to great things to come.”
In addition to NIPSCO’s financial gift, their resident artist Ish Muhammad worked with teens from the Lubeznik Center for the Arts to create a series of works that now decorate the walls of the Dunes Café. Muhammad and NIPSCO Executive Vice President & President Violet Sistovaris presented Franciscan with a check in front of the art.
“We wanted to really enhance this phenomenal facility with a meaningful, lasting addition. We think Ish and the Lubeznik Center did just that.” Sistovaris said. “Our health is probably the most important thing that any one of us possesses. Us here in Northern Indiana are so fortunate to have the Franciscan health system within our community.”
