Northwest Indiana Community Will Unite to Fight Local Hunger

200 Volunteers needed to pack 140,000 meals

September 14, 2021 –Crown Point, IN & Indianapolis, IN

On Saturday, September 18th the true meaning of community will be on display in Crown Point as volunteers come together to pack more than 140,000 meals for local families in need. This is the 13th year the Northwest Indiana community has partnered with Indianapolis-based hunger relief agency Pack Away Hunger to hold the event. The event is made possible in part by grants from the Crown Point Community Foundation and the Legacy Foundation as well as donations from local businesses, churches, and individuals.

“People are often surprised to learn that hunger is a very real problem for many families in Northwest Indiana,” commented Abigail Harlan, Executive Director at Pack Away Hunger. “These meals will fill the shelves of local food pantries, providing healthy meals to families who don’t have regular access to nutritious food.”

“Year after year, we’re so encouraged by the generous spirit of the Northwest Indiana community,” commented event organizer Georgia Falkenberg.  “Our 2020 event was smaller due to COVID-19, so we’re excited to return to a bigger event and create more meals. Donations and foundation grants have given us the opportunity to pack 140,000 meals, but we need 200 more volunteers to make that happen."

Volunteers will assemble the meals on Saturday, September 18th at the Crown Point High School Cafeteria. Participants may choose from two packing shifts: 8:30am – 11:00am or 12:30pm – 3:00pm.
