February is Black History Month—a time to honor the extraordinary contributions of African Americans and reflect on the work still needed to achieve equity in health outcomes. For over 70 years, the American Cancer Society has been a leader in research that has shaped breakthroughs in cancer screening, treatment, and prevention.
But despite this progress, health disparities persist and demand focused action. Did You Know that Black women have higher rates of breast cancer under age 40 than women of any other racial/ethnic group? It’s a stark reminder of the work that lies ahead and why the American Cancer Society remains committed to equity in cancer care. That commitment is at the heart of their latest initiative, VOICES of Black Women, and we're excited to share how Methodist Hospitals can help.
The VOICES of Black Women® study is a groundbreaking, long-term study launched by the American Cancer Society. Its goal? To partner with 100,000 Black women to create the largest study to understand cancer risks and outcomes among this demographic in the United States. This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about transforming health outcomes and creating lasting change for Black women everywhere.
Throughout Black History Month and beyond, the American Cancer Society remains dedicated to advancing health equity and pioneering innovative cancer research to create meaningful, lasting change in the lives of Black women. Alongside the VOICES study, the American Cancer Society is committed to amplifying critical health messages within Black communities through initiatives like partnering with Health Equity Ambassadors to drive impactful action and raise awareness nationwide.
At Methodist Hospitals, we believe in the power of collective voices to make a difference, and we are proud to present this opportunity to participate in the VOICES study and share it within our communities.
Join thousands stepping up for Black women’s health. Two simple actions can change lives.
- Enroll. We encourage every eligible Black woman to consider enrolling at voices.cancer.org. Just one hour a year can transform health outcomes for Black women everywhere.
- Share. If you are not eligible, we strongly encourage you to share this link with a Black woman in your life and within your personal networks. Your voice is essential in helping the collective fight against cancer.
Please note that if you choose to participate, your participation and the information you provide will not be shared with Methodist Hospitals.
Who can join the study?
Black women between the ages of 25 and 55 with no history of cancer (except basal or squamous skin cancer) and living within the 50 United States and Washington, D.C.
What is involved in the study?
Participants complete surveys on the VOICES study website. Enrollment takes less than 15 minutes to complete. The first survey will take about one hour to complete. Participants will then take shorter follow-up surveys online twice a year as we grasp meaningful insights that lead to changes in Black women's health.
It only takes a few minutes to check your eligibility at voices.cancer.org or share the link with a Black woman in your life. The fight against cancer needs your voice. Together, we can change the future of cancer as we know it.
