Young Presented with the Hazelett Award for Leadership in Grantmaking

Young-Hazelett-awardBarbara Young, President of the Porter County Community Foundation, was presented the 2014 Hazelett Award for Leadership in Grantmaking by the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance at its statewide conference on June 11.

The Hazelett Award for Leadership in Grantmaking was created in honor and memory of Susie Hazelett, a leader in Indiana’s philanthropic community before her passing in 2004. The award was established to honor an individual that displays a giving spirit as evidenced by mentoring and nurturing professional development in others; a giver of time, talent and other resources; and a strong professional with the highest standards, integrity and creativity.

Young, has been affiliated with the Foundation since its inception. She assumed the role of President in October, 1998. Under her direction, the Foundation has experienced tremendous growth and is recognized for its leadership in addressing key issues in Porter County.

Foundation Board Chair Gregg Sobkowski stated, “In addition to building the community’s endowment, Barb has done much to help strengthen Porter County nonprofits by providing direction and assuring that the Foundation supports local organizations through capacity building programs, professional development and facilitated collaboration.” He noted that she seeks out and provides professional development opportunities that have allowed nonprofit administrators and board members to have access to resources and training that may not otherwise have been possible.

“When there is a need or issue facing the community,” Sobkowski said, “Barb has consistently stepped up to convene community leaders and stakeholders to address the most pressing issues as part of the Foundation’s mission.”
