Education Manager

Park Location: Bellaboo’s Play & Discovery Center

Primary Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the General Manager, responsible for the research, design, coordination, implementation and evaluation of educational programs and events at Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center.

  • Provides exceptional customer service to park visitors in a courteous, friendly, tactful manner.
  • Develops, implements and oversees educational programs, exhibits, events, classes, activities, camps and daily programming.
  • Works with the general manager to ensure all educational programs and events comply with state laws and standards.
  • Ensures the content of educational programs attract visitors, promote child learning and development, and fulfill the interests of Lake County residents, school groups and visitors.
  • Supervises part-time and seasonal staff to ensure proper development and presentation of educational programs.
  • Works with human resources to ensure all employment law requirements are fulfilled.
  • Maintains building, exhibit and play space integrity, design, decoration, cleanliness and appeal.
  • Researches current educational trends, materials, techniques and advancements in the field for proper in-house development and application.
  • Creates customized programs and events specific to school or group requests.
  • Handles, records, and reports incidents, accidents and injuries to the corporate office.
  • Develops and analyzes financial data, provides necessary financial projections and reports, as required, compiles and submits necessary information to superintendent for annual budget when requested.
  • Supervises cashiers, cash control, and bank deposits.
  • Respectfully handles customer complaints and refunds, as necessary.
  • Establishes and nurtures key collaborations with local and regional partners.
  • Reviews and designs promotional materials.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of programming, including writing program proposals, coordination and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of general operations and services provided by the Lake County Parks, including rules, regulations and safety procedures.
  • Ability to effectively develop, implement and present educational programs of interest and use to Lake County residents and visitors.
  • Ability to research new topics, techniques, and trends in the educational field.
  • Ability to train, monitor and evaluate the work of part-time and seasonal staff.
  • Ability to establish a good working relationship with park personnel.
  • Exceptional skills in working tactfully and harmoniously with volunteers and employees from other divisions.
  • Ability to exercise mature and good judgement in stressful situations.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with an emphasis on Park Management, Business Management or Child Development. Experience in the operation of a for-profit children’s educational facility preferred.

Licensing & Certifications: Valid Indiana Driver’s License, ServSafe certification, and registration as a professional in the National Recreation and Park Association. NRPA is through the Department, the others can be acquired post hiring.

Work Environment: This is a full-time position and hours and days will vary according to needs. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work alone and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Additionally, the employee may be required to work flexible hours, weekends, extended shifts and holidays.

Travel: This position may require some travel (i.e., workshops, conferences, etc.).

Facilities Supervisor

Primary Responsibilities: Under the direction of the general manager, performs a wide variety of tasks, including, but not limited to maintaining safe, clean and functional facilities.

Essential Functions of the Job: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Provides exceptional customer service to park visitors in a courteous, friendly, tactful manner.
  • Performs grounds maintenance of the facility, including, but not limited to the water filtration system and other minor repairs.
  • Responsible for directly overseeing café operations, including, but not limited to, inventory control, replenishing food and beverage supplies, and the upkeep and cleaning of kitchen equipment.
  • Assists horticulturist with basic plant and flower maintenance and general grounds needs as necessary.
  • Supervises and trains staff.
  • Provides direction to part-time staff on tasks and assists with various other duties like opening and closing, group admissions and floor supervision.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies as needed. Disposes of refuse and waste in proper receptacles. Responsible for inventory and purchasing of janitorial supplies.
  • Maintains building and play space integrity.
  • Assists with programming throughout the facility when assigned.
  • Assists with education and enforcement of facility rules. Responds to emergency call-out 24/7 and opens and closes facility when needed.
  • Assists Three Rivers Park Technician with basic grounds needs when needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs with small tools and equipment.
  • Must possess strong skills and working knowledge of cash handling.
  • Knowledge of general operations and services provided by the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries about facility operations in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with subordinates, peers, supervisors and employees from other divisions.
  • Ability to train and evaluate the work of subordinates and establish a good working rapport with all staff.
  • Ability to meet with the public and relay information to them in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to make written and verbal presentations.
  • Must possess outstanding customer service skills.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Graduation from high school or General Equivalent Diploma (GED).

Licensing & Certifications: Valid Indiana Driver’s License, ServSafe Certificate and City of Gary Food Handlers Card.

Work Environment: This is a full-time position and hours of work vary based on business needs and are assigned by the General Manage. The facility is open every day of the week and holidays. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status.
