Winter Weather Driving Tips From The Porter County Highway Department

Winter Weather Driving Tips From The Porter County Highway Department

If you’ve lived in northwest Indiana for any length of time, you know that winter weather can change in an instant, especially with the dreaded lake effect snow. It is important that we be prepared for anything Mother Nature sends our way. Especially when it comes to driving during winter months.

“There has been a pattern every year where accidents increase during the first few accumulating snow events,” said Highway Department Supervisor. “We are all used to summer driving and forget that we need to adjust our driving habits.”

The Highway Department has prepared the following list of Winter Weather Driving Tips to remind residents to adjust their driving habits and keep themselves (and other drivers) safer during snow and ice events.

· If there is SNOW DOWN, please SLOW DOWN.

· Drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions.

· Allow more time to arrive at your destination. Patience is the key!

· Know the road conditions BEFORE travelling.

· Remove snow and ice from all glass, mirrors and lights.

· Check your tire tread and pressure.

· Don’t crowd the plows! Allow at least five car lengths between you and the plow.

· Do NOT pass a snow plow when it is actively working.

· Do NOT use cruise control.

· Allow more stopping distance.

· Be mindful of black ice.

· Turn on your headlights.

· NEVER drive through whiteouts.

· Delay your trip until conditions improve.

· No calling or texting while driving.

· Keep your cell phone charged and handy in case of emergency.

· Never leave your vehicle if you get stuck. Wait for help to arrive.
