The Builders Club of Willowcreek Middle School has many subcommittees that perform service activities within our school and community.
One committee is the Adopt-a-Beach group. The students in this group went to the Portage Lakefront and Waterway on two occasions in the fall and once this spring. Each time students observed and recorded lake and meteorological conditions. After that, the students collected and tallied the many kinds of trash that are left on the beach or that wash ashore. The garbage is weighed and the data is tallied and entered into the Alliance for the Great Lakes’ website.
The student group was fortunate to have Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park Ranger Christine Gerlach assisted the group in its endeavor.
