The History of Labor Day is founded by unions, parades and well, labor. In 1882, the unions of New York City decided to throw a parade to celebrate and show support for all unions. Ironically, the workers had to give up a day’s pay to attend, but there was also a lot of beer being swilled so they were mostly ok with it.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are about 14.3 million union workers in the United States. Labor Day was originally created by the U.S. labor movement to recognize American workers for their impact on the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Without the workers, our country wouldn’t have been able to flourish as it did. Today, Labor Day signals the unofficial end to summer and the start of fall activities, such as back-to-school season.
Did you know that besides the historical fashion faux pas of wearing white post Labor Day, it also denotes the end of the hot dog season? According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will eat 7 billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Make sure to grab an extra pack for your weekend cookout and enjoy!
Monday, September 5, 2022, is the 140th official Labor Day in American history. Enjoy your BBQ, boats and gathering of friends and family, but remember that Labor Day marks an important moment in American history. We commemorate it with a day off from work and school in honor of those who gave us these opportunities to celebrate.
