What’s the Big Deal with May 6th?

give-local-may-2014Tomorrow is the nationwide holiday known as Giving Day. You may or may not have seen nonprofits in your area shouting out messages, tweets, press releases, hanging signs, or overheard someone talking about it lately. But what is it? And how is it important to you and your community?

Giving Day is a big day for nonprofits all over America because it is one day where people just like you will be coming together to "give local" through their local community foundations, charities and national partnerships.

The idea of the community foundation came about 100 years ago in 1914 so this year will be the centennial celebration of the community foundation!

Community foundations are tax-exempt, charitable organizations that provide a simple approach to giving through personalized service and community leadership. Today, more than 750 community foundations can be found serving communities all over the country.

The Porter County Community Foundation is taking part in Giving Day with the local effort Give Local Porter County. They will be joining communities across the country in a 24-hour straight time of giving on May 6. This is a completely online event that and anyone can donate. Money raised will be used for a wide variety of causes.

Donations made on May 6th will also help the nonprofit of your choice potentially win national and local incentive grant prizes! That means more money for more charities! This is a huge opportunity to easily show your generosity and help you local communities.

Starting at midnight on May 6, go to www.givelocalportercounty.org and donate to any of the organizations below! Then after you donate, send out a tweet, share on Facebook, and just tell people so that the word can get out and that will get more people to give!
