Working with building blocks will soon be more than just children’s play at the Portage Township YMCA. “WeDo Lego” begins this January and supports the STEM initiative providing education for children in science, technology, engineering and math. Funding for this LEGO-based robotics-building and programming curriculum is provided by the Porter County United Way. All students ages 7-12 are encouraged to participate.
Young scientists explore the mechanics of how things work by working in pairs to build moving Lego models, enter their own computer scripts and then test their fully functioning robots. Making new friends and learning to working together are always added benefits in Y programs.
“We’ve tested the We Do LEGO program on a small scale with our Y-Care After School program participants, and the kids are excited,” stated Ms. CC, School Age Child Care Coordinator. “The funding from Porter County United Way will ensure that many more students in the Portage community become inspired about learning! We’re delighted to have this opportunity to engage children in both mind and body.”
WeDo Lego is an ongoing program that builds on skills and knowledge. Registration for the inaugural session, which will include the “Dancing Birds” and “Smart Spinner” Lego kits, is open now at the Y Welcome Center or online at www.ymcaofportage.org. WeDo Lego meets in the Y Teen Center for seven week sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6-7 p.m. For additional questions about this program, please contact Ms.CC@ymcaofportage.org or call 762-9622.
