Using the Web to Stay Motivated in Achieving Your Goals

It may be an understatement that the web has an amazing amount knowledge available for free, but what continues to surprise me is the breadth and depth of topics that can be found in the blogosphere alone.

It's my personal goal to write and publish a novel one day. My main enemies? Self-critique and procrastination. I put off writing for one day, and then another, and then another, and now it's August, and I'm looking at my mental self with a bit of confusion, remembering when I set myself this goal--at least a year ago--and I've still barely started. I can't ask myself where the time went, because I know where it went--it went to TV, or reading, or other personal time that, while important, isn't helping me achieve my goal when I use it as an excuse to procrastinate.

Typing Here's where the blogosphere comes in. There are thousands of articles on how to defeat procrastination and writer's block, where to find inspiration, and how to improve your writing, from character development to grammar. Whatever your goal may be--to write a novel, to start running every day, improving your business, improving certain skills, or anything else--there's bound to be information out there to give you tips and help keep you motivated. Of course, taking the first step and following through is up to you, but it can be helpful to read articles and posts from people who are skilled in your desired subject and take your type of goal seriously. It helps you take it more seriously and get excited about achieving your goal.

You can also find blogs by people who are skilled, or even experts, in the field you are pursuing. Granted, not every writer who's ever been published is going to have great advice, but there are plenty out there who do have great advice to give. Do a little internet research and figure out who some of the skilled professionals are in the field of the goal you're pursuing--they often have blogs and can give helpful advice or lead you to others who can. Often bloggers from different sites will team up at times; if you find one great blog you'd like to follow, checking out who it's linked to can also be helpful.

If you have a goal you've been putting off, whether it's writing, getting your closets organized, getting in shape, improving your business, learning more about technology, or anything else, Google your goal (or check Technorati, an online blog directory). You will likely find some blogs with fresh material to help keep you motivated in starting and achieving your goal.

What are some of your goals? Do you read any websites or blogs to help stay motivated?
