Urban League of Northwest Indiana is calling on Region residents to apply for four academic scholarships to help further their education. Find the details below or on Urban League’s website.

2023 Joseph Trent Morrow Scholarship

2 - $2500 ONE TIME Non-RENEWABLE SCHOLARSHIPS.

The Joseph Trent Morrow scholarship will award two (2) $2500 ONE TIME ONLY NON-RENEWABLE scholarships to eligible applicants who are current year high school graduates from Gary Community School Corporation or School City of Hammond or School City of East Chicago who are admitted to and plan to attend either Indiana University (IUB) Bloomington or Indiana University (IU NW) Northwest. Students must plan to major in banking, finance, or law. In partnership with the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, an independent committee will review applications and select scholarship recipients based on eligibility.

Eligibility Requirements:

All three (3) criteria must be met to be considered for this scholarship. Funds paid directly to Indiana University by the donor. 

Student must be a graduating senior from one of the following Indiana school districts:

  • Gary Community School Corporation
  • School City Hammond
  • School City East Chicago

Must be admitted to and plan to attend either:

  • Indiana University Bloomington (IUB)
  • Indiana University Northwest (IU NW)

Must plan to major in one of these fields:

  • banking
  • finance
  • law

Additional requirements:

  • Grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale
  • Extracurricular activities, community service, and volunteering

2023 Jesse J. Washington Memorial Scholarship

One (1) $500 scholarship award for an African American graduating senior from the class of 2023 in Northwest Indiana (Lake, Porter or La Porte County) that plans to major in mechanical technology or seek a position in the automotive industry.

The Jesse J. Washington Memorial Scholarship fund celebrates students who plan to continue their education through certification from local trade schools, community college, or university with an emphasis on applied sciences. Mr. Washington was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Jesse was an accomplished mechanic with certifications from Lincoln Technical Institute and General Motors working for US Steel, Summerfield GMC Truck Company, Hackett Engineering and the Levy Company before becoming a full-time entrepreneur. He owned and J & D Automotive in Gary, Indiana. This scholarship was established to honor his hard work, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit in giving back to his community. Mr. Washington served God, his family and his country. Students who possess similar interests in mechanical technology, automotive science or industrial enterprise are encouraged to apply. December 2022, May 2023 or June 2023 applicants are eligible. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • December 2022, May 2023 or June 2023 high school graduate
  • African American graduate from a school in Northwest Indiana (Lake, Porter, or LaPorte County)
  • Plan to pursue mechanical technology, automotive science or industrial enterprise
  • Accepted or admitted into a local trade school, a community college or a university for applied science
  • Curious and interested in entrepreneurial opportunities

2022-2023 Returning Adult Scholarship

Ten (10) - $1000 non-renewable scholarships

We understand that many adult students made themselves a promise to return to school and complete their education. However, plans were delayed, dreams denied. But now is the time to pursue that promise you made to yourself. The Lilly Endowment in collaboration with the Urban League of Northwest Indiana will offer ten (10) - $1000 non-renewable scholarships to assist adults accepted into post-secondary educational programs. Programs must be accredited and include trade and vocational education. In 2020, the Urban League of Northwest Indiana celebrated 75 years of service. The vision of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, Inc. is to ensure that the Urban League becomes the premiere agency that supports and promotes neighborhood community collaborations towards improvement, capacity building, and awareness of citizens in areas of education, financial literacy, health/wellness, civic/civil leadership and diversity throughout Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties, which would encourage a better quality of life. Additionally, the mission of the Urban League is to promote, encourage and enhance services to improve the social, education, and economic conditions of African Americans and other minoritized groups in Lake, Porter, and La Porte counties.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Resident of Lake, Porter, or LaPorte County in the State of Indiana
  • Registered voter in the state of Indiana
  • Currently admitted or registered for an accredited trade, vocational, college or university for the upcoming school year

2023 Dr. Bruce D. Hillman Legacy Scholarship for Returning Adults

1 - $500 scholarship

The Dr. Bruce Hillman Legacy Scholarship was established to support youth in Lake County, Indiana in their pursuit of higher education. Dr. Hillman was a bridge, and a support that provided assistance to families and children in his lifetime. Thanks to generous donors, Dr. Hillman’s legacy will continue to live on and thrive as we build up his lifelong work through education. Education was vitally important to Dr. Hillman in his personal and professional life. He worked tirelessly to encourage, motivate, and impact lives through his work and passion. As a agent of change, Dr. Hillman’s life reflected perseverance, faith, and dignity. We want to continue to honor his legacy and provide support to three students in Lake County, Indiana.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Returning adult student living in Lake County Indiana
  • Letter of acceptance for the next school year from an accredited college or university
  • Participant in community and/or volunteer activity

Special consideration for a veteran or a single parent headed household
