Fiesta de Breasta Follow-up with Photos written by Viva la Femme

A Top-2010-Health-Fiesta-de-BreastaFundraiser was held last Saturday, sponsored by Vive la Femme & Portage Community Theatre to raise money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Fiesta de Bresta featured a full buffet dinner accompanied by entertainment. There were raffle prizes, along with pinatas filled with treats, a bean bag tournament, a rock/paper/scissors tournament, and lots of opportunities to win prizes. Jambulance provided music along with karaoke.

Portage Elementary Schools Celebrate Making Healthy Choices written by Edna Elwood

May 5th marked the annual Portage Township Schools Drug Free Club picnic. All eight of Portage Township’s elementary schools participated in the event. The Drug Free Club is open to fourth and fifth grade students at each elementary school.

Porter Health System Goes Tobacco Free written by Porter Health System

Porter Health System announced that all of its facilities, including their grounds and parking lots, will become totally tobacco-free beginning June 1, 2010– which coincides with the World Health Organization’s “World No Tobacco Day” on May 31, 2010. The decision to eliminate tobacco use on all Porter campuses was recommended by a special Porter Tobacco-free Task Force and unanimously approved by the medical staff leadership and administration.

Operation: Cops For A Cure written by Portage Police Department

Cops For A Cure Incorporated, a public benefit Corporation, has been established to generate financial support and public awareness for breast cancer and related research.

In March of this year Officer Flora Akers of the Portage Police Department was diagnosed with breast cancer. What started as a show of support by her fellow Portage Officers has now grown to a multi-county effort. Very soon over 1,000 police vehicles in Lake, La Porte and Porter County will be displaying pink cancer ribbons with Officer Aker’s badge number “Portage 139” on the top of the ribbon and “Fight Like A Girl” along the side of the ribbon.

At the Harre Union Ballroom on Tuesday, May 18, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist, spoke to a sold-out room about the complexities of the brain and stroke awareness, in an event sponsored by Porter Health System. Stroke is the number 1 disabler in America, affecting 750,000 people a year. Dr Jill’s presentation was especially compelling, not only because she is an expert in knowing how the brain works but because on December 10, 1996, at age 37, she suffered a massive stroke.

Got Yogurt? Your Gums May Thank You written by Cavanaugh Orthodontics

It’s a bird; it’s a plane; it’s… yogurt! It appears that plain, simple yogurt may be the newest superhero in our ongoing battle against gum disease. Researchers at Kyushu University in Japan studied nearly a thousand subjects between the ages of 40 and 79, and found that those with higher intakes of lactic acid foods like yogurt exhibited significantly fewer signs of periodontal (gum) disease. The study concluded that regularly eating yogurt may help keep your gums and teeth healthy.

Fight Like A Girl Fashion Show Supports Survivors written by Edna Elwood

The Fight Like A Girl Fashion Show this past weekend turned out awesome! Tracy Hughes and Judy Gehrels were the hosts of this event. Approximately 200 people came out to support our cancer survivors. We had children survivors this year and two men, Joe Morales and Jim Carpenter. The luncheon was provided by F&P Events. There were 55 gift baskets donated for raffle drawings. Beyond Pink provided the fashions for the models to wear.

On November 18, 2010, Porter Healthy Woman hosted speaker and author, Ali Vincent, at Sand Creek Country Club to tell her story of how she became the first female "biggest loser." The journey began when, after Ali and her mother watched the season finale of the show, her mother took the initiative to find out where the next casting call would be and encouraged Ali to do it. She was disappointed to find out that the next season was only accepting couples. That's when they both got the idea to do it together.
