Tired of the House Heating Blues?

mortgageEvery winter, cold temperatures seep in, often leaving you with high energy costs through the chilly months. Take control of your energy bills, all while going green! Try some of these easy switches this winter.

Install a programmable thermostat. Installing a thermostat you can program allows you to lower the temperature while you sleep and while you’re away from your home, saving you money on your energy bill.

Grab a blanket or sweatshirt. If you feel chilled, grab another layer of warmth before turning up the thermostat. Just putting socks on around the house can make a big difference.

Run a humidifier. Adding moisture to the air will make it feel warmer throughout your house. Plus it’s great for house plants and those stuffing noses!

Add plastic to your windows. Most hardware stores have do-it-yourself window kits that allow you to cover your windows with plastic. This helps keep drafts to a minimum.

Add insulation to your attic. The Department of Energy offers a calculator to help you estimate how much insulation your home needs; find it at www.energy.gov.

Tend to the fireplace. If you have a traditional fireplace, it may be losing warm air while increasing your heating bill. Heated air is sucked out to fuel the fire and then the warm air escapes through the chimney. Consider converting your existing fireplace to a more efficient pellet or gas fireplace. When it’s not in use, be sure to close the damper and seal the opening shut.
