The Expo Center yet again housed a food fest on Thursday evening. This one, however, was not geared toward local restaurants; it was geared toward local health care communities. It was the Third Annual Porter County Taste of Care event and Prompt Ambulance was the host.
Guests came from all over Northwest Indiana to the Taste of Care to try unique dishes that were created by chefs from local health care facilities. The chefs each had a special dish prepared and they were ready at their booths, handing out food, talking with the guests and answering questions.
“Our chef is participating, and we’ve won two years in a row,”Judy Kukelka, Marketing Director at Rittenhouse Senior Living of Portage said proudly. “The food at a living community is so important to seniors and their families when they’re looking for a place. We also serve on the board for the Porter County Triad. It’s a senior-based group as are we so we’re all in it for the same reason.”
There was a raffle and freebies were available for guests to take home. A contest was held to decide who the Top Chefs were. Chefs were judged based on creativity, plating, and table decorations. Chefs pulled out all of their garmage skills and culinary know how and created delicious dishes for everyone to feast upon. There were fat free chocolate cupcakes, savory meatballs, juicy prime rib, cake pops, moist orange sponge cake and a lot more. Drinks were available for purchase in the middle of the room.
An extra bonus was the special visit from the University of Chicago Hospitals (UCAN) helicopter. It came and landed in the grass right in front of the Expo Center for all to see.
Prompt partnered with the Porter County Triad, which is an organization that benefits seniors. And the goal of the Taste of Care this year was to raise awareness of the organization and gather donations for it.
“The Taste of Care takes place in Porter County, Lake County and St. Joseph County,”Linda Gurgel Co-President of the Porter County Triad said. “This is the first year that the Triad has been involved. I’m here as support today; talking to people, getting them involved so we can work on behalf of our seniors. I’m having a great time!”
Businesses that were in attendance: Addison Pointe, Waters of Duneland, Avalon Springs, Rittenhouse, Life Care Center of the Willows, Life Care Center of Valparaiso, Brookdale Senior Living, Meals on Wheels VNA, Millers Senior Living, Residences at Deer Creek, Porter Regional Hospital, and University Of Chicago UCAN.
