Portage High School Music Department Presents 2014 Fall Concerts

PHS-LogoThe Portage High School Music Department will present a series of Fall Concerts over the next two weeks. All Concerts will be held at the Portage High School East Auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m. with adult admission of $2, students $1, pre-school and seniors free.

The first concert in the series will be presented by the PHS Orchestras on Tuesday, October 3rd. The Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras will perform music of a seasonal nature, enhanced by stage decorations and costumed musicians. The combined orchestras will begin the evening with a rendition of The Addams Family by Vic Mizzy. The Beginning Orchestra will play Dark Catacombs, by Sean O’Laughlin, followed by Spy vs. Spy (Matt Turner), and The Code (Alan Lee Silva), performed by the Intermediate Orchestra. The concert will conclude with three selections by the Advanced Orchestra, including Sightings by Jeremy Woolstenhulme, Midnight at the Mausoleum by Brent D. Smith, and Fantasia 2000 from the Walt Disney IMAX film of the same name, arranged by Blake Neely. The orchestras are under the direction of Carrie Ann Carlson, Director of Orchestras and Graciela Burroughs, student teacher from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

The second concert in the series will feature the Portage High School Choral Department. This concert will be presented on Tuesday, October 14th. All of the Portage High School Choirs will be performing selections chosen from a wide variety of choral repertoire, including selections from the classic, popular and folk genres. They will also be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner, singing a beautiful arrangement of our National Anthem. The Choirs are conducted by Aaron Riegle, Director of Choirs and Anna Duran, student teacher from Valparaiso University School of Music.

The final concert in the Fall Series will be presented by the Portage High School Bands under the direction of William Timmerman and Drew Rhoda. This concert will be presented on Thursday, October 16th. The Bands will perform a wide variety of music, including many pieces from the standard band literature. The Beginning Concert Band will perform selections by David Holsinger and Brian Balmages. The Intermediate Concert Band has prepared Pavanne for a Dead Princess by Ravel, and Lost Lady Found, from Lincolnshire Posey by Percy Grainger. The Advanced Band will perform Dimitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture and Frank Ticheli’s Fortress. In addition, the PHS Marching Band will perform the 2014 marching show, Legends of the East. Additional Marching Band Directors include Annelise Rhoda and Chad Brinkman.
