This year’s summer season may be winding down but the good folks at Sunset Grille in Michigan City aren’t willing to let it go quite yet as they continue to host live music and delicious food in their relaxing rooftop bar and grille.

Whether you’re a beachgoer, seeking to soak up those last few summer rays or just looking for a terrific place to relax and spend time with friends and family, Sunset Grille offers some of the most spectacular views that Northwest Indiana has to offer. The sunsets and great food are well known, but they also feature live music, with local acts playing there frequently. Local favorite band Steve and Mary E. have played at the grille every Sunday, continuing through the month of September.

“We are happy to welcome Steve and Mary back to Sunset Grille again tonight,” said Julie Krause, General Manager of both Patrick’s Grille and Sunset Grille in Michigan City. “They’ve been with us all season, playing every Sunday night for the crowd here and the people really love to see them. It’s a great fit for the restaurant. They have a really nice, folksy kind of sound and it just works.”

The grille’s traditional American-style menu features a selection of burgers and hot dogs. They also feature a chicken sandwich or tossed salad (chicken optional) with choice of Ranch or Balsamic dressing. Side dishes include french fries, onion rings, cheese sticks, nachos and cheese fries. Fruit cups are also available for those on a diet or just wanting something lighter. Featured appetizers are shrimp cocktail and Jamaican chicken bites. A full bar is available with featured cocktails and several terrific brews on tap.

Krause says that visitors to Sunset Grille can expect an entirely different type of dining experience.

“It’s very casual. We’re right here on the beach. It’s laid-back,” she said. “People come here, have a nice time at the beach, then come up and see us for a quick bite and a nice cool drink as they watch the sunset. That’s really what we’re all about.”

Krause said that the success of the restaurant is the result of a cooperative effort between Michigan City and the owners of Patrick’s Grille.

“The city’s been really great to work with,” Krause said. “The city owns the building and we handle the food and beverages. They want this location to be successful and they’ve been really good to work with whenever a problem comes up. We’re looking forward to continuing that relationship when we return next year.”

Keven Sircher of New Buffalo, Michigan was visiting the beach with his parents and friends from overseas. They stopped into Sunset Grille to enjoy the delicious food and amazing views.

“We’re showing them around the area,” Sircher said of his friends from Germany. “This is our first time here. The ambiance is great, the views are terrific and the service is fantastic.”

Tom Teets is a lifelong resident of Michigan City and a huge fan of not only Sunset Grille, but of Steve and Mary E. as well.

“I love it here! Every Sunday night is fantastic. We come up here every weekend to have a few drinks and enjoy the music. Julie Krause does a fantastic job. You’ve got live music, sunsets, good people. What else is there?” Teets laughed.

Mary E. was especially happy to welcome her brother to join in the evening’s performance.

“Steve and I have been here every Sunday night all summer long,” Mary E. said. “We have an acoustic band and we play at various places around the area. But tonight’s very special because we have a special guest: my brother, D.C., is here from Taiwan. He’s about to go on tour with our other brother and his wife, but he’s here with us tonight on saxophone and we’re ready to do this thing!”

Mary E. says that she especially enjoys playing at Sunset Grille.

“We love it! It’s great… we can read the crowd and tailor our playlist to whatever vibe the crowd may have,” she said. “If it’s a quieter crowd, we’ll play more mellow stuff, but if they’re louder and rowdier, then we’ll rock out!”

Sunset Grille will be open through the month of September, weather permitting. The rooftop will be open Thursday and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Food service ends at 8 p.m. daily.
