As many of you may know, Housing Opportunities officially purchased Spring Valley in February 2011. After some rehab in the office space and thanks to many volunteers who helped, the staff was able to move offices permanently to the Spring Valley 2001 Calumet Ave location. Since HO purchased S.V. all 14 of the temporary housing units have been filled. We are currently providing housing and case management to 10 families and 4 singles.
Some of our success: One family moved out in February into our transitional housing pro-gram and now has successfully graduated to our permanent housing program.
One of the families in our transitional housing program moved into our low-income housing units at S.V.. She utilized the program and case management and became self sufficient, allowing her to rent an apartment on her own.
A single Mom living at our S.V. temporary housing graduated to our transitional housing program. Prior to moving in she only had supervised visits with her children and now she is going to court to obtain unsupervised visits and possible custody of her children because she now has stable and affordable housing.
Another Mom, since moving in temporary housing and working with case management, has been able to gain employment and is now able to have visitations with her children. She will also move into low income housing at Spring Valley.
Two families that are living in temporary housing at S.V. have been able to work with case management along with budgeting issues and realized that they can afford to rent an apart-ment and live independently, The two families will be renting at S.V. low income rentals.
HO has also partnered with Porter-Starke to provide affordable housing for some of their cli-ents. Wow, the staff and tenants are really making a difference in this community! Having a stable home environment provides more than just a roof over your head, it helps you take control of your life!
