Spring has come! That brings with it warm weather, flowers, and showers. And all of that is great, but don’t think that all of your cares need to be thrown out the window when it comes to caring for your home. The winter weather takes its toll on a house and spring weather brings with it a whole new set of things to watch out for.
But you can keep your home in great shape as the warmer days come. With easy to follow tips from SERVPRO of Porter County, you can keep your home in tip-top shape.
1. Check your gutters. Loose or leaky gutters can cause improper drainage, leading to basement or crawlspace flooding. Remove debris that can muck up your gutters and make sure your downspouts facing away from the foundation.
2. Check the wood trim around doors, railings, and decks. Get repairs done now to prevent more damage that can be caused by April showers.
3. Look at your roof from the ground up. Do you see shingles that are cracked, buckled, loose, and/or missing granules? Those need to be replaced.
4. Check your flashing around the plumbing vents, chimneys, and skylights. See if there is any damage to your chimney and contact a chimney sweep if the flue needs cleaning.
5. Springs rains can cause flooding so check areas in your yard that are low or next to your foundation. They should be filled with compacted soil. Do it quick because not only will that collected rain water cause foundation damage, come summer you could have a swarm of mosquitos all up in your business.
6. If you do your own yard work, clean up your lawn equipment. Check the gas/batteries and sharpen the blades. Show those weeds who’s boss.
7. Get your AC cleaned and replace filters regularly. Cleaned coils mean that your air conditioning will work more efficiently, saving your energy bill.
8. Check outside hoses for winter damage and dry rot. Turn the water on and cover the opening with your fingers. If your fingers stop the flow then there may be a damaged pipe and in need of repair.
9. You won’t be using your fireplace as much so make sure that firewood is stored away from your house, at least 18 inches off the ground and two feet from any structure.
10. Check concrete around the outside of your home. Is it cracked or does it move? Then it needs to be fixed. Fill cracks with silicone caulk or concrete crack filler. Then power wash it and seal it to… seal the deal.
