Tennis has steadily grown into a powerhouse sport across Northwest Indiana, with schools consistently producing top-tier talent. As the 2025 spring season approaches, teams across the Region are gearing up for another year of fierce competition. From Chesterton High School to Munster High School and all other schools in between, each program brings unique strengths and storylines to the court.
The Chesterton Trojans continue to be one of the strongest teams in the Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC). The team finished its 2024 season with an impressive 11-4 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play, securing its fifth consecutive conference title.
Junior Luke Sorgic led the charge at number one singles, finishing with a 17-7 record, earning Team MVP honors, and making history as the first Chesterton player to be named the second Team All-State. Sophomore Peytan Belegal also impressed with a 16-4 record at number two singles, earning All-District and All-DAC honors for the second year. The Trojans also had four players selected for the All-DAC Team, and with a strong returning roster, the team will be looking to continue its dominance in 2025.
Meanwhile, Munster remains a model of consistency in Indiana high school tennis, boasting a state-best of 44 consecutive sectional championships. With a new coach, John Morris, stepping in this season, the Mustangs will aim to extend their remarkable streak even further. With a deep lineup and a winning culture, Munster continues to be a force to be reckoned with.
Michigan City High School is a program on the rise, finishing the 2024 boys with a 6-6 record. On the girls’ team, the Wolves welcome an exciting new player, a 15-year-old exchange student from Spain eager to bring her international experience to the team.
Last season, Michigan City showed promise at the New Prairie High School Junior Varsity (JV) Tournament, where multiple players, including Makenna Nowatzke (first in Singles number two), Bri Harvey (third in Singles number one), and the doubles team of Naomi Williams and Natalie White (third in Doubles number one), had strong performances. With a mix of experienced returners and new talent, Michigan City hopes to make waves in the 2025 season.
Valparaiso High School is another powerhouse to watch. The Vikings' boys finished 2024 with a flawless 10-0 record. The team’s depth and discipline made them one of the toughest teams in the Region, and the team will be looking to maintain its undefeated streak heading into the new season. With momentum on their side, Valparaiso is primed for another dominant campaign.
On the other hand, Merrillville High School is aiming for a comeback after a challenging 2024 season in which the boys finished 6-13 overall and 0-7 in conference play. Despite the team’s struggles, the Pirates have a developing young core and are determined to turn things around in 2025. The girls are also looking forward to a fresh start, kicking off their season on April 15 against North Newton High School.
Portage High School has remained a steady competitor, with the boys finishing 11-8-1 and the girls closing out 2024 with a 9-5 record. Both teams have shown they can compete at a high level, and with returning talent, they hope to continue their success in the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, Penn High School continues to be a powerhouse in Michiana tennis. The boys team has secured dominance over schools like Warsaw High School, Valparaiso, and Elkhart High School, showcasing its regional strength. Their season was marked by triumphs and challenges, finishing third in the NIC Tournament and sixth at the Homestead Invite. On the other hand, the girls’ team had an exceptional run last year, winning both sectional and regional championships, further cementing Penn’s reputation as one of the area’s top tennis programs.
With powerhouse programs like Chesterton and Munster continuing their dominance and teams like Valparaiso and Portage pushing for more significant achievements, the 2025 high school tennis season in Northwest Indiana promises to be one of the most exciting yet.
Whether it's a tournament run or a hard-fought conference battle, the passion for tennis in the Region is strong. The upcoming season is set to deliver intense competition, standout performances, and plenty of action on the courts.
