South Shore Line celebrates teachers with free rides this holiday season

To thank local educators for their hard work this school year, SSL is inviting teachers to ride the SSL for free December 22 – 29 on all weekday, weekend, and holiday trains. To ride, educators will need to present a valid school ID.

Nicole Barker, Director of Capital Investment & Implementation for the SSL, said, “We want to show our appreciation this holiday season with this gift. Teachers work so hard all year to positively impact the lives of students in Northwest Indiana, South Bend, and Chicago. This is our way of saying thank you.”

Throughout the year, the SSL offers various campaigns and opportunities for free rides. SSL is currently offering all riders free weekday eastbound rides through December 31, 2021. Passengers should simply board applicable weekday eastbound trains with no ticket purchase necessary. Please do not active mobile tickets for weekday eastbound trips. Passengers are responsible for paying all applicable fares on weekend trips and weekday westbound trips.

You can also take advantage of our Kids Ride Free Program, allowing up to three children 13 years of age and under to ride free with each paying parent or guardian on off-peak weekday and all weekend trains.

Please be aware per federal orders; the SSL continues to require masks in all SSL stations and onboard trains throughout Indiana and Illinois. The order is in effect regardless of vaccination status. Passengers who do not comply with the mask mandate will be subject to removal from trains. Certain passengers are exempt from the mask mandate, including passengers with medical/health issues and children under the age of 2.

The South Shore Line is a commuter rail line operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and the South Bend International Airport in South Bend, Indiana.
