Snowed In

"The weather outside is frightful, and the fire is so delightful, and since we've no place to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!" These were the lyrics that were going through my head as I was driving through the snowiest conditions I have encountered in a Northwest Indiana December.  (All photos courtesy of Edna Elwood - thanks for capturing all that hard work going on throughout the city).

With anywhere from a few inches in Chicago to a foot of snow fell in areas of Northwest Indiana over the weekend, parts of Northwest Indiana are expected to receive 5 to 10 inches more on Monday according to the National Weather Service with areas of northern Porter County potentially receiving up to 20 inches. Winter storm warnings have been issued all over Northwest Indiana including Porter County where the warning is in effect until at least 9 PM CST. And of course with wind gusts up to 45 mph, getting around will be a problem for those who need to.

But, it can be fun, too. Sure, it took my a little while to get out of my drive way this morning to get into the bare ValpoLife/PortageLife office, but it was pretty fun, too. With nearly no one else on the road and seeing cars being buried with snow on the side of the street, it's truly a sight to see and definitely breaks up the hum-drum of the normal work week.

In fact, our very own Ben Kolodzinski had a story to tell in which he was in Cleveland over the weekend, and his flight to Midway was cancelled. He tried to find any way to get back, and the best option he had was to ride a Greyhound bus back in which the ride was very long and interesting.

"We had a half-hour layover [during the 11 hour trip]," said Kolodzinski. "Because they had to repair a flat tire. It was a long trip."

For Valparaiso and Portage and the rest of Northwest Indiana, stay safe out there but remember to have fun, too!

"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!"
