Sinai Forum at Purdue Northwest spurs illuminating conversations with today’s thought leaders

In 1953, a determined woman and a group of neighbors in Michigan City, Indiana planted the seeds of an invaluable community resource, whose impact continues to resonate today.

The Sinai Forum at Purdue Northwest, originally founded at the Sinai Temple in Michigan City, Indiana, is one of the nation's premier lecture series. The brainchild of Sylvia Bankoff, the forum was created to provide the community with access to world-class speakers and to encourage thoughtful dialogue on important contemporary issues.

Over the decades, the Sinai Forum has hosted a wide array of distinguished guests, including Nobel laureates, journalists and political leaders, fostering a spirit of intellectual curiosity and public engagement. In 2006, the forum was endowed to Purdue University Northwest, further enhancing its reach and impact. The Sinai Forum continues to be a cornerstone of cultural and educational life in the region, drawing audiences eager to explore diverse perspectives on global and national issues.

The Sinai Forum at Purdue Northwest proudly announces its 2024 season and the next group of esteemed speakers who will share their valued perspectives on subjects covering politics, constitutional law, conservation, comedy and mental health. Information on the season lineup, tickets and event dates can be found at pnw.edu/sinai-forum.

Liz Cheney, who formerly served as the U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023, will open the season on Sept. 15. Cheney served as Vice Chair of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol and is a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library’s prestigious Profile in Courage Award.

A familiar face returns to Northwest Indiana through the forum in Jim Gaffigan on Nov. 24. The seven-time Grammy nominated comedian, actor and author, who grew up in Chesterton, Indiana, will deliver his unique brand of humor, which largely revolves around his observations on life.

“The forum features an impressive lineup of speakers this year, showcasing a wide range of topics and Jim Gaffigan adds a dose of humor and fun! We are incredibly honored and excited to welcome him back home,” said Leslie Plesac, executive director of the Sinai Forum at Purdue Northwest.

The 2024 season will also feature Briana Scurry, a Hall of Fame goalkeeper for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and two-time Olympic gold medalist; Jonathan Turley, the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University; and Joel Sartore, a National Geographic Explorer, photographer and conservationist.

The five speakers join an extensive list of notable names who have visited Northwest Indiana and graced the Sinai Forum stage. Other dignitaries have included influential leaders, visionary scientists, media personalities and writers. From Eleanor Roosevelt and Walter Cronkite to Gloria Steinem and Steve Wozniak, over 350 leaders have shared their viewpoints in a town-hall setting with Northwest Indiana audiences. The Sinai Forum at Purdue Northwest continues to provide impactful programming that connects community members with acclaimed personalities.

"The Sinai Forum has had a lasting impact on our communities, consistently proving its relevance by bringing together diverse voices and fostering insightful dialogue on the most pressing issues of our time. It remains a vital platform for growth and engagement,” said Plesac. “Being open to new ideas, and having a willingness to consider other viewpoints, is more important than ever.”
