Shmagranoff Scores Game Winner in 2-1 Victory Over Calumet College

PUC-PeregrinsSenior Rachel Shmagranoff connected on a penalty kick with 25 minutes to play and the Peregrine defense did the rest down the stretch to seal the Purdue University Calumet women’s soccer team’s 2-1 conference victory over crosstown rival Calumet College of St. Joseph Tuesday.

The Peregrines (5-6, 1-3-0) captured their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory in the road decision over the Crimson Wave (4-8, 1-4) at East Chicago Central High School.

Shmagranoff scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 69th minute to snap a four-match winless streak, stepping up when junior teammate Michelle Wartman (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) was tripped in the box on a breakaway attempt.

Wartman (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) recorded the match’s first goal in just the 9th minute – her second of her career -- via an assist from sophomore Iridiana Mendoza (West Chicago, Ill./Community) to give the Peregrines’ a 1-0 lead early.

After Calumet College’s (4-8, 1-4) Rebecca Berry tied the game at 1-all in the 23rd minute, the teams went into the half deadlocked at one apiece.

Erika Brinkman (Kalida, Ohio/Kalida/Owens C.C.) picked up her third victory of the season with a match-high nine saves, including five in the second half.

The Peregrines return to action Saturday when they face CCAC foe Cardinal Stritch in a 3 p.m. contest at Munster High School.
