Socially conscious shopping is on the minds of nearly every consumer these days, as shoppers search for that buying experience that will also in some way support the causes that are important to them. Essentially, we vote with our dollars.

Enter International Subaru of Merrillville, who banks on the brand’s global Share the Love campaign by donating to a buyer’s charity of choice every time they purchase a new vehicle.

In the Region, that local charity is Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana. With every new car purchase, International Subaru of Merrillville will invest $300 into the buyer’s charity of choice. They also are donating $50 for every new leased vehicle.

“Obviously, it’s nice to help buyers purchase their dream vehicle, but it’s also great to help guide them in giving back to their local community,” said Tracy McCarty, internet sales manager at International Subaru of Merrillville. “People right now are looking for that buying experience that is going to help them make a difference in the world, and now, at no cost to them, they can make that difference locally.”

The Share the Love campaign that Subaru promotes globally is a way to connect buyers to a shopping experience that is meaningful in more ways than one. While buyers can choose national charities as well if they wish, International Subaru of Merrillville opts to offer a local option, too.

“This is the second year that Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana was selected by International Subaru of Merrillville as their hometown charity, and we are so grateful for that partnership,” said Rachel Hurst, Director of Development at Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana.

Last year, McCarty said International Subaru of Merrillville presented Meals on Wheels with a $14,000 donation after the year-end campaign. This year’s campaign ends Dec. 31, and they hope to meet or beat that goal.

“The donation provided 7,000 meals for people in five counties across Northwest Indiana,” Hurst said.

But just as important, the donation enables Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana to continue being that social connection for people in need.

“Especially at the holidays, we come together to share fellowship and each other’s company, and for many of our clients, their meal delivery is the time for that,” Hurst said.

It’s also a comfort for family members and caregivers to know that, in a sense, the community is wrapping their arms around their loved ones every time a nutritious meal is delivered.

Hurst said the Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana staff and volunteers have formed what they call the Subaru Club, and enjoy spreading joy and cheer with their meal deliveries, which many of them make in their own Subaru vehicles.

McCarty said International Subaru of Merrillville is well-served with a team who likes to Share the Love.

“All 34 of our employees are engaged with this and we talk up the program to our friends and families as much as we do the customers,” she said. In fact, McCarty’s own son is considering buying a new Subaru, so she said she’ll, of course, encourage him to choose Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana for his charity.

The hottest vehicles right now on the International Subaru of Merrillville lot are the Subaru Outback, with everything you need for all-weather driving, and the Subaru Ascent, the SUV known for its exceptional value.

Buyers interested in making a Subaru vehicle the perfect holiday present should head to the dealership now and choose Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana for their local charity when they make their purchase or lease.
