Seniors at the YMCA

YMCA-Seniors-1Much of the community thinks of the Y as a family facility. This is TRUE, but what most don’t realize is that seniors are part of the family unit. We nurture the potential of our senior population as much as any other. Most seniors enjoy getting out early in order to enjoy their evenings as home, so the Y does their best to provide programing to accommodate the population.

If you’re into fitness, the y has several a.m. classes that are free with your membership. First is, Step I which is a basic class involving simple step patterns. Gentle Stretch which is a senior Yoga class consisting of standing and sitting positions. Blast to the Past is a great class for active older adults with low impact aerobics and strength training. Y-GET MOVING class helps to increase flexibility. The first half hour is spent walking and the second half hour includes strengthening, balance, stretching and flexibility.

The Y has opportunities in their aquatics dept. Open swim and lap swim are held at the Portage High School West Pool. As many of you know the Y does not have a pool but with a Y membership, members can utilize the school’s pool free of charge Monday thru Thurs 6-8 p.m. and Friday’s 4-8 p.m. for these programs.

YMCA-Seniors-2If you ever wanted to learn computers, the Y has a class for you. Beginner’s computer class is held on Monday evenings from 6-7 p.m. in their very own computer lab. These classes cover everything from turning on and off the computer, to exploring the Internet, basic word processing skills and sending and receiving e-mail.

If golf is your thing, the Y has 2 golf leagues for individuals and partners. Partner League runs from April 28 thru August 25 on Thursday evenings. Tee times are between 3:30 and 4:00. Independent League runs from May 18 thru Aug. 25 on Wednesday mornings. Tee times are between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. All golf leagues are played at Robbinhurst Golf Club.

The Y’s partnership with St. Mary Medical Center has made it easy for seniors to take advantage of FREE and open to the public wellness screenings such as BMI, Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure. Call the YMCA for wellness screening schedule. On Thursday, April 14th from 9-noon the YMCA will be having a pulmonary function test. Free of cost. What is a PFS? Pulmonary function screening evaluates and measures how much air and how easily the air moves in and out of your lungs. The results of your pulmonary function screening test will help determine if one has any potential problems with his/her lungs which may be caused by exposure to allergens or irritants, such as chemicals, smoke, ragweed, and/or even animals. These results will aid one's medical doctor diagnose a lung disease such as asthma, emphysema, or pulmonary fibrosis. These tests may detect a respiratory defect at an early stage. These tests do not test for lung fitness or exercise tolerance. Looking to kick the smoking habit??? St. Mary will also providing information to the community regarding Smoking Cessation. This informative resource will be held at the Y on Monday, April 18. May 3 from 8-10 am St. Mary Medical Center will be performing a lipid panel screening (cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides).
