Rittenhouse Village Neighbors Live It Up at Block Party

A block party brought out the best in Rittenhouse Village at Portage Friday morning. CJ Richard, director of facility operations, said there are about 36 residents who call the village their home. Events like the annual block party, complete with cookout cuisine and desserts, add a lot to the Rittenhouse Village experience.

“It’s a great way for new residents to meet current residents,” Richard said. “This is something where they can mingle and make new friends.”

Melissa Benefiel, senior lifestyle counselor, said while the party is for the residents, it’s also open to those who may be interested in moving into the neighborhood.

“It’s a way to say, ‘thank you,’ to residents, to give them a nice event and to show how important they are to us,” Benefiel said. “It also lets us really reach out to people who we’re a match for and for them to see who their future neighbors would be.”

During the event, staff gave interested newcomers a tour of a Rittenhouse Village home. Gatherings like these also cement the bonds of neighbors and of the staff and residents.

“It’s like having lots of grandmas, grandpas, aunts and uncles out for a party,” Richard said.

Resident Wanda Samuelson has been in the neighborhood for a year and enjoys the relaxing atmosphere of the area.

“I like not having to mow my lawn,” she laughed. “But, really, I love my house, and I love my neighbors. I love to be with people.”

Jackie Bartley, resident of more than six years, enjoys the entertainment, games and events the staff hosts.

“I like the companionship of the people here,” Bartley said. “I was alone too much before. Everyone’s really nice; it’s like one big family. I look forward to seeing everyone every day.”

Rittenhouse Village is an independent living community for seniors, located at 6235 Sterling Creek Road in Portage.
