Ringing In Spring with a Sprint

Cumberland Crossing was closed off, classic music blasted from the outside speakers, and runners were at their marks for the Ringing in Spring 5k Race at the Valpo YMCA. One of the largest races in the region, the 5k had over a thousand participants again this year, as the seventeenth annual event put on by Mike Jones, the race director and a veteran distance runner. This is the third year with the new YMCA building and course, and it’s clear the popularity continues to grow with the praises of those who participate.

Last year, the contestants had to deal with pouring rain, and this year the wind took its toll on those with shorts and short-sleeves., but just like the rain hadn’t stopped them the year before, they were ready to take on the bitter cold for a shot at beating their old records.
As Mike Jones rang the bell, they were off, with the fastest runners up front and the walkers in back - a system used by popular demand. Some took the race very seriously, giving their all at a shot for first, while others nonchalantly enjoyed the exercise with their friends and family, waving to the onlookers as they passed by.

Quickly enough, the first few runners appeared in the distance, trekking their way toward the finish line.

“You can’t judge a runner by how they look!” someone shouted as the first few runners came down the finish line. Young and old, big and small - the diversity of participants was only outdone by the enthusiasm of those who patiently waited in the cold for them to return, cheering them on with a runny nose and a smile. They waited over an hour for both the runners and walkers to finish, encouraging them with the same gusto as those who came in first.
