Ring in the New Year with a Healthy New You

positively-changing-livesAs a way to ring in the New Year with a healthy New You, the Portage Township YMCA has started a New Year’s Resolution initiative to encourage the community to be healthy and involved.

Starting February 1, 2013, the Y will be offering,” Buddies for Bucks!” Existing members can bring in a buddy and receive $25 in Y-Bucks for each buddy enrolling in a membership. Y-Bucks must be redeemed within 60 days. Y-Bucks can be used for programs or memberships.

As an organization that aims to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the Portage Y hopes to encourage more community members to join and take part in the Y’s initiatives such as the walking club, family float swim time, running club and much more. Enrolling in a household Y membership also offers an exclusive benefit of 30% off of most programs. The Y has something for everyone and as it says in our mission statement, “we are available to all”. What makes us different is that we are charitable, in that we offer scholarships to those in need for programs and membership.

Representatives at the Portage Y hope to change the mindset of those in the community and help those on the fence, commit to making Portage a healthy place for all. Here are 5 New Year’s Resolutions that we recommend to new members joining in 2013.

One resolution the Y is promoting is for community members to engage in a healthier lifestyle. Taking the stairs instead of using elevators and walking instead of driving, are a few examples of ways we suggests staying active within the day.

The Y is a place where people can go to live a healthier lifestyle-we want to share the message that residents can help their community just by joining the Y”, said Linda Mendez, Fitness Coordinator.

The second resolution is to volunteer. Volunteers have the opportunity to engage as coaches, assistants, mentors and support assistants.

Along with the self-fulfilment theme of volunteering, the third resolution the Y offers is the calling of philanthropy. Each tax-deductible dollar contributed to the Annual Support Campaign goes directly to making YMCA programs and membership available to those in need. It only takes one to make a difference. Be that one.

The fourth resolution for the community is to engage in a new activity and walk away with a new skill. The Y offers opportunities in, computers, prayer groups, Pilates, aquatics, spin, walking/running clubs, racquetball, volleyball, Zumba and much more.

In addition to building bonds through programs, the final New Year’s resolution is to encourage spending time with family and friends. We at the Y believe that providing a space for socializing and reconnecting with family and friends is just as important as becoming physically healthy. For over 40 years, healthy families have been the focus of the Portage Township YMCA. Start your New Years off on the right or left foot by joining the Portage Township YMCA.
