In a couple of short weeks summer will officially be upon us, which for many families means the start of kids’ sports and camps. Before these activities begin, it is important to ensure your child is healthy and ready to participate.
Why are physicals necessary?
Having a physical completed before starting school, sports or a camp is required by many organizations. It is also beneficial for your child because it provides a helpful snapshot of their overall health. Additionally, a physical helps monitor your child’s growth and development, ensures they are practicing healthy habits and keeps medical records up to date. Physicals are especially important before participating in sports as they can identify the potential for injuries or problems that might interfere with performance.
What can I expect during a physical?
Some organizations may have specific requirements for a physical, but generally, a routine physical will include:
- Questions about family and personal medical history
- Taking measurements of height and weight
- Obtaining vital signs such as blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate
- Evaluation of flexibility, pulse, posture, joints and more
- Assessing body systems such as lungs, heart and eyes
Many healthcare providers will also ask your child about alcohol and tobacco consumption, as well as dietary supplement usage, where age appropriate. They will also want to know about sleep habits and immunizations. A parent or guardian will need to be present in the examination room for children younger than 18 years old. Make sure you are prepared with any paperwork required by the school, sport or camp as well.
