Barajas' Blasts Pinch-Hit Home Run; Peregrines Drop Two to Huntington
Senior Kaitlin Barajas provided some late-game drama with a pinch-hit home run to send Game 2 into extra innings, but it wasn't enough for the Purdue University Calumet softball team in a pair of nonleague losses to Huntington University Friday.

The Peregrines (9-15) fell to Huntington (15-7) by scores of 4-0 and 5-4, the second game coming in eight innings at Dowling Park's Fifth Third Field.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Sunday, with a nonleague pair set against Cleary University at Dowling Park. Game 1 is slated for a noon CT start.

Game 2: Huntington 5, Peregrines 4 (8 innings)
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Peregrines trailing, 3-2, senior Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) connected on the first pitch of the at bat for a pinch-hit home run, her first in a Peregrine uniform, to send the game to extra innings, tied at 3-all.

With the international tiebreak rule in effect and a runner placed on second base, Huntington would score a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning, making it 5-3 in favor of the Foresters.

In the bottom of the eighth, Peregrines freshman Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) would score to cut the deficit to one run, but the Foresters wouldn’t allow another score the rest of the inning to come away with the 5-4 victory.

Purdue Calumet starter Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) crushed her third home run of the season to help her own cause in the second inning, plating Hannah Lopez (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) to put the Peregrines ahead, 2-0.

But Huntington would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning, after a two-RBI triple by Emily O’Leary scored Alyssa Hiple and Marty Harris to even the score at 2-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, Bess Fiechter would homer to left center to give the Foresters their first lead of the game.

Pagan suffered the loss for the Peregrines in the circle, giving up five runs, three earned, and striking out three in eight innings of work.

At the plate, the Peregrines were led by senior Katilin Barajas (Dyer, Ind./Andrean), who went 3-for-6 with two doubles and freshman Olivia Sardella (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central), who finished 3-for-5 with an RBI across the two games.

The Peregrines return to acton Monday with a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference makeup doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene University. Game 1 is set for 3 p.m. CT in Bourbonnais, Ill.

Cleary opened the game with the Cougars’ lone run of the day, scoring on a Kaitlin Domire single to left field. The Peregrines would answer two innings later, when Sardella singled to center field to score classmate Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield), who walked.

The Peregrines capitalized off a big Cougar error in the fifth to score two more, as Sardella reached on a miscue by the shortstop and a hustling Steffens and pinch runner Emily Cole (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) were both able to cross home plate.

Kaitlin Barajas led the way for the offense in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with a double and Sardella was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Peregrines, who totaled six hits against Cleary starter Olivia Silvestri.
