Purdue Calumet Introduces Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

PUC-LogoPurdue University Calumet has taken another step in furthering green, sustainable initiatives by installing two electric vehicle charging stations on campus.

The stations, each featuring two charging ports, are available for use at these campus locations:
South: east of Woodmar Avenue and south of 173rd Street in parking lot just west of the Fitness & Recreation Center and
North: east of Woodmar Avenue and south of 169th Street, just east of Anderson Building

Free to any EV user
Initial plans call for the charging stations to be available and free to any electric vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis.

Purdue Calumet has installed the charging stations as a participant in “The NIPSCO IN-Charge around Town EV Program.” The program provides incentives for participating businesses and other organizations to install a public EV-charging infrastructure.

Sustainability commitment
“With the installation of these EV charging stations, Purdue University Calumet has taken another step in greening our campus and demonstrating the university’s commitment to sustainability initiatives,” Purdue Calumet Associate Director of Facilities Engineering Paul Pratt said. “These charging stations broaden transportation choices available to students, faculty and staff interested in reducing their environmental foot print while saving on fuel costs.”

With EV charging typically requiring multiple hours, Pratt encourages EV users to exercise courtesy by promptly relocating their vehicle to another parking space when charging is completed.

EV charging stations on rise
“Those who have vehicles that are using this technology generally have cards that allow access to charge at our stations,” Pratt said.

Use of electric vehicles contribute to improved fuel economy, lower fuel costs, reduced emissions and increased energy security. Purdue Calumet’s participation increases the number of EV charging stations deployed to date through the NIPSCO program to 24 at 18 Northwest Indiana locations.
