Public Compost Sites to Close for Season Saturday

recycling-waste-reduction-district-of-porter-countyThe last day of the 2014 season for public access to the Valparaiso compost site, 2150 W. Lincolnway, and the Boone Grove compost site, 546 South 400 West, is Saturday, Dec. 6.

During the last week of the season, the Valpo site will be open 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Boone Grove site will be open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Valparaiso site, owned and operated by the City of Valparaiso with assistance from the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County, will begin 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday off-season hours on Jan. 10, 2015. All Porter County residents can use the site to recycle their once live Christmas trees, wreaths and other organic holiday waste.

Residents should remove plastic bags and other containers upon dropping off materials. Wood or lumber that has been treated is not accepted at either site.

Other materials accepted for recycling at this site include: household batteries, electronics (anything with an electrical cord or run by batteries), fluorescent light bulbs (tubes and CFLs), toner cartridges, old media (CDs, video cassettes, floppy disks, etc.), and cell phones and cell phone accessories.

The Saturday off-season hours will continue through April 2015, when both compost sites will open for the season. The Boone Grove site, owned and operated by the district, will remain closed after Dec. 6, until the regular season begins in April 2015.
