Prep Sports Round-Up 04-11-14

Elliott Granados (2-for-3) had two runs and drove in three for the Vikings, who prevailed in non-conference action on Thursday. Five runs in the fifth inning erased what had been a four-run South Central lead.

Tyler Ellrich earned the victory on the mound, striking out three and walking one in four and one-third innings.

Noah Eaton and J.T. Snyder each scored twice for the Sattellites.

Valparaiso 14, Highland 2 (Freshman Baseball)

The Vikings won the non-conference match-up.

Portage 10, Griffith 0 (Baseball)

The Indians pounded out 13 hits in the five-inning victory over the Panthers. Kevin Jones picked up his second win of the season, striking out nine in four innings and had three RBIs on offense.

Sam Schest also had three RBIs for Portage.

The Portage JV won, 18-2.

Portage earned wins fromo Victoria Ostrander (100 meter dash, 13.07 seconds), Paige Pizer (800 meter run, 2:21.65) and Lacinda Appelman (12:49.60).

The Wheeler 4x400 meter relay team of Kelly O'Shea, Alex Mendoza, Jessi Niaves and Lindsey Arndt earned a victory with a finals time of 4:18.63.

Boone Grove's Rachel Cantwell was the event's top pole vaulter, earning a finals score of 9.00.

Portage 6, Chesterton 1 (Softball)

Kiley Jones went 2-for-3 with a two-run homerun and three RBIs for the Indians while striking out seven to get the win on the mound.

Adrien Hall (3-for-4) added a pair of doubles and Haley Perez had two hits, including a double and an RBI for Portage, who improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC).

Portage 3, Chesterton 2 (JV Softball)

Sierra Mueller went 2-for-3 with a double for Portage in the DAC win.

Portage 3, Marquette 2 (Girls Tennis)

Emily Sajda earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles for Portage.

Lauren Wilk and Emily Vahary teamed for a win at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-0 and Patty Mota and Haley Mergly earned a win at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

The Portage junior varsity won, 6-0.

Valparaiso vs. Munster (Girls Track)

The Vikings hosted the Mustangs in a dual meet on Thursday. There was no team score, but both teams had multiple winners.

Munster had individual wins from Saveda Majety (100 meter dash), Olivia Askew (400 meter dash) and Zola Carter (200 meter dash) among others.

Valparaiso had a victory from Alison Mundell (1600 meter run) and Madison Buyer (300 meter hurdles low).

The Valpo 4x800 relay team of Lexi Ferngren, Nicole Chaibai, Ellie Joll and Julia Rhode finished in first with a finals time of 10 minutes, 15.63 seconds.

Abbey Kapitan won the shot put event with a finals throw of 35-10.

Marquette-CatholicRiver Forest 20, Marquette 2 (Girls Softball)

Despite an improved performance from Marquette, the Ingots prevailed easily on Thursday.

Marquette 7, Boone Grove 5 (Baseball)

Bryce Freels struck out for in earning the victory for Marquette. Isaiah Papineau recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Blazers.
