The Porter County Community Foundation (PCCF) Men’s Fund has granting $5,000 to the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department (MTVFD).
Out of the many applications for the 2023 grant, the fire department was selected to receive the grant to support the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) for the firefighters. The equipment includes jackets, pants, firefighting gloves, vehicle extrication gloves, fire helmets, fire boots and fire-resistant hoods.
“This PPE will be used to protect the firefighters who are wearing it along with saving lives and protecting property in the areas the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department serves,” said James Lewandowski, a member of the MTVFD.
The roster of firefighters at the MTVFD currently has 29 members, the most the department has ever had. This impressive number has put a strain on the department’s ability to outfit all members with proper PPE due to the small amount of PPE they currently have available.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends PPE be replaced every ten years. As probationary members join the MTVFD, they are frequently issued gear older than ten years due to the costs associated with purchasing new PPE. When a probationary member becomes a full member, new PPE is purchased.
“Protecting those who protect us and our community is so important. The Foundation is proud and honored to support these brave men and women,” said Bill Higbie, PCCF President and CEO.
Established in 1976, the MTVFD was born from the unwavering commitment of residents who recognized the need for a reliable fire service in their rural, farm-dotted region. They’ve remained steadfast in the mission to serve and protect the residents and properties of Morgan Township. They are strategically positioned to respond swiftly to the estimated 250 emergencies incidents that happen each year in the areas covering approximately 45 square miles.
About the Men’s Fund at the PCCF
The Men’s Fund consists of a group of men (and women) from around Porter County that want to make a difference in our community, without having to attend any events or even leave the comfort of the couch. Any contribution to the fund allows one to be a part of this generous group. One nonprofit is selected each year to receive a $5,000 grant from the Men’s Fund. The remaining amount raised is endowed in the fund to continue helping future generations - forever. Gifts to the Men’s Fund can be made at pccf.gives/MenGive.
