Portage YMCA’s Turkey Trot Gobbles Up 320 Participants

Thanksgiving is not only about turkey, football and families coming together but about members of our community coming together to celebrate healthy living. The Portage Township YMCA hosted their 10th annual Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning. 320 runners and walkers showed up on the misty morning hoping that the rain would hold out. With a temperature of 40 degrees, it was a great morning of exercise before a big Thanksgiving meal. Twelve excited children completed the 1K run.

As they crossed the finish line, Tammy the Turkey handed out ribbons to smiling faces. As the DJ played the theme from “Rocky” and the fog horn blew, 320 runners took off down the “Rails to Trails”. After 16:15 minutes had passed, Geoffrey Lambert crossed the finish line. Overall female winner was Rachael Marchand, with a time of 18:12. Medals were awarded to the top 3 runners in each age group.

“Without the help of volunteers and sponsors, this race never would have been possible,” said Ryan Penrod, Event Organizer. “I want to thank everyone who helps make this a bigger and better event each year which helps support the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign, which provides financial assistance to families in need.”

The YMCA provides healthy lifestyle activities that bring people together, with shared athletic and recreational interests.
