April showers bring May flowers, and winter bummers bring spring runners. The weather is agreeable, the sun is shining, and the flowers are making their debut across the region. Who doesn‘t want to be outside?
Everyone at the Portage Township YMCA all shared the same sentiment. Saturday morning was the 3rd Annual Bound to Blossom 5k Run/Walk. The race was put on by the Portage Township YMCA and the course was laid on the “Prairie Duneland Trail”. Runners and walkers received a commemorative t-shirt and awards were given out to the top male and female finishers of the race.
“Families can come out and enjoy the day and to have camaraderie with each other,” Nancy Simpson, Marketing and Fund Development Director for the Portage YMCA, said. “It’s for people for people who are beginning runners. It’s a beautiful day and we want everyone to have fun.”
Around 100 people participated in the race. There were large groups that ran from Solid Platforms and South Haven Elementary School, families, friends, and individuals.
The winner of the race, Brandon Will, an 8th grade student finished the race with a time of 18:34.
“The course was nice,” Will said. “This is my seventh race of the year and I wanted to run this one because it was close by and it’s for a good cause.”
Proceeds from the race will go to the YMCA’s annual support campaign. The theme of the 2013 campaign is “We Build People”. Funds gained from special events in 2013 benefit area programs provided by the YMCA that enable families to utilize them that would otherwise be unable to. These programs promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. They come in all forms like summer camps, wellness classes, child care, teen outreach, etc. This way, there is something for everyone to try and love.
