Portage Township Schools Update, September 21, 2018

Kyle Elementary
This week was Fire Prevention week at Kyle Elementary. The students had the opportunity to learn all about fire safety. They also had fun eating lunch with a fireman!

Myers Elementary
Myers third graders listened to a presentation given by Firefighter Chris as part of Fire Prevention Week. They learned the importance of making a plan to exit a burning building, determining a meeting place, and staying out.

Saylor Elementary Indiana Dunes Trip
Saylor 1st graders went to the Indiana Dunes on Wednesday! They learned information about sand dunes, and how they are formed. It was a wonderful day to enjoy our national lakeshore!

Saylor Elementary STEM
Students in Mrs. Kubik's 5th grade class did an Egg Drop STEM activity this week. Student's designed their parachute and crate. They were given $100 in class money, to purchase the materials they needed. Next, they built their design, and finally, they tested them!

PHS Marching Band
The Pride of Portage Marching Band competed at the Brownsburg High School Marching Invitational on Saturday, September 15th. The band had an outstanding performance and finished in 5th place. The band will perform next at the Penn HS Carnival of Bands on September 22nd in Mishawaka, IN. Performance time is 8:00pm EST.

League of Women Voters Speaks at PHS
On Thursday September 20th, the Porter County League of Women's Voters spoke with Portage High School Seniors about voting rights and helped register eligible students to vote!

PHS Engineering Class
On Tuesday September 11, 2018 students from Mr. Hruskocy's Introduction to Engineering Design and Computer Science Principles class attended a local electric car show to celebrate National Electric Car week. Students were able to view and interact with various different electric vehicles including Teslas, Chevrolet Volts, and Nissan Leafs. Students were able to speak with programmers, engineers, and owners of these vehicles to explore possible careers pathways dealing with electric vehicles. The highlight of the day was being able to ride along in Teslas and witness their enormous power, which completely caught the students off guard!
