Aylesworth Elementary
Students in Mrs. Zachara's 2nd grade class finished their week learning about odd and even numbers by participating in a STEM challange. Students were asked to construct a house where only odd numbers or even numbers met at the corners. It was a great review, full of engagement, and cooperative learning!

Portage Fire Department Visits Central Elementary
On Friday, September 23, all the students at Central Elementary, in Portage, were treated to a visit by our Portage Fire Department. The students were taken through many steps concerning a fire from being proactive to good choice making if a fire should occur. They reminded the students to review with their parents where they should all meet outside of their home, if there was a home fire, smoke detector batteries should be checked/replaced each month, and to crawl out of the house if there is smoke above their head. During lunch, many firemen circulated the cafeteria answering questions any student might have.

Myers Elementary
Fifth-grade students at Myers have just experienced a major upgrade in the technology they can now access in the classroom. Chrome Books have recently replaced the netbooks students were using for projects, Internet access, and other applications.

Because Portage Schools utilize Google Apps for Education, students also now have their own district-issued Google accounts which will open up new possibilities, including access to folders and documents shared by their homeroom teachers, easy access to shared documents for group projects, and a one-stop location for e-Learning days which Portage began taking advantage of during the 2015-16 school year. Additionally, this now solves the storage problem encountered by students who would sometimes save work only to have difficulty finding it later. Google Drive now allows them to save and edit their work, which is saved every few seconds without the students having to stop the work they’re doing.

Some of the fifth-grade students at Myers Elementary have already learned some of the basics in Google Forms & Google Docs, and have practiced sharing documents with other students in their class. Recently, students also created Google docs to share with a teacher in the building, to let them know they’re learning how to use Google Apps, and to tell them why they decided to share with that specific teacher.
