Aylesworth Elementary
Each year, the Porter County United Way sponsors a program called Reading Buddies. Here are first graders from Aylesworth Elementary with their reading buddies. Each child gets a stuffed animal to read with during their reading time. The students love to cuddle and read with their reading buddy!

Central Elementary
The 5th grade students at Central Elementary in Portage have been promoting a love for reading at a young age by partnering with the 1st grade students as "Reading Buddies." Once a week each of the 5th grade classrooms meet with a 1st grade room and read for 30 minutes. This program is valued dearly by all students involved, and all look forward each week to their time together.

Crisman Elementary
50 Families whose children attend Crisman Elementary School in Portage received a holiday turkey basket filled with ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Each grade level was assigned a food item such as instant potatoes, stuffing mix, canned veggies, cranberry sauce and yams. Teachers and staff provided the turkeys and 5th grade students donated money for pies, whipped cream and rolls. Ten 5th graders traveled to Town & Country to pick-up the perishable items and boxed everything for families to pick-up in time for the holiday! Happy Thanksgiving!

Myers Elementary
Myers 4th grade students have been working on persuasive writing. In celebration of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday students have taken a different perspective- the perspective of a turkey. Students wrote letters beseeching humans not to eat them as part of their Thanksgiving feast. Just in case humans did not take their letters to heart, students also “disguised” their turkeys in a variety of costumes. Students had a lot of fun experiencing the holidays from a new point of view!

Saylor Elementary Wild Turkeys

Monday afternoon, while Saylor students were on the playground, they were visited by a flock of Wild Turkeys. The closer the students moved toward the fence the closer the turkeys moved toward them. The turkeys made their way around our South Haven neighborhood, and could also be seen flying and perched in trees. We're not sure where the turkey's came from, however, we like to joke that they came to protest against our Thanksgiving Luncheon held on Friday.
