Portage Township Schools Update, January 22, 2016

Aylesworth Elementary
The fifth graders at Aylesworth have been working on a report in which they researched famous Americans who have made an impact on our country. Part of their project grade is to dress up (props included) like their famous American. The fifth graders presented their findings to the other kids in our school!​

Central Elementary
Mrs. Jodi Barnum's 1st grade students from Central Elementary School in Portage were being Soil Scientists Thursday morning! They did an experiment while learning about soil with Mrs. Michelle Benson from the Porter County Soil & Water Conservation District.

Jones Elementary
Michelle Benson from the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District visited Mrs. Guerra's kindergarten class at Jones Elementary to teach the students the difference between sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. The kids had a ROCKIN' good time!

Kyle Elementary
Mrs. Evan's 2nd gr. class were motivated when sharing their readers theater poems with 1st gr. students.

Myers Elementary
Myers Elementary 4th and 5th graders have a new club to join this year - Drama Club! Students are doing an 8 week course focused on perfecting performance skills that also carry over into the real world. Activities include playing theatre games to increase focus and be aware of their physicality, developing creative characters and scenes, and rehearsing scenes with inflection and tone. The club is run by Ms. Stephanie Meyer and Mr. Charles Scanlon.

Saylor Elementary
Mrs. Benson from the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District, came to talk to Saylor's second graders about fossils last Friday. Students learned about different kinds of fossils from around our region such as the Horn Coral and Cephalopods. They also experienced how to uncover a fossil using liquid. It was a great learning experience.
