Portage Township Schools Update, February 26, 2016

Central Elementary
These 7 student from Central Elementary in Portage are participating in the Circle the State with Song festival. They will be performing at Hebron High School on March 5, 2016. The students have been meeting on Saturdays with other students from Portage schools to practice for their performance. Good luck singers!

Jones Elementary
The 3rd grade at Jones Elementary have been studying space this month. Last week they made a trek to the Merrillville Community Planetarium and now they have finished their study with their annual Third Grade Space Fair.

Each student was required to complete two projects at home. However, they were given time during the school day to research some of the following project choices; making a game, creating a test, building a solar system model, composing a song or rap, or by writing a science fiction story about a trip to outer space, just to name a few. All of the projects were out of this world!

Kyle Elementary
Some of Mrs. Banaski's 2nd gr. class achieved their AR goal for the 2nd Trimester.

Saylor Elementary
Saylor 2nd graders were visited by Lindsey Thomas from South Shore Arts on Monday. Students made self portraits of themselves inspired by the book "The Skin You Live In" by Michael Tyler. The portraits reinforced the story after reading the book in class. The project was a fun and creative way to celebrate how diverse our students are.

Portage High School
The Preparing for College and Careers class at Portage High wrote individual SMART Goals at the beginning of January. Through following their action plans, many students are realizing those goals. The class celebrated the goals achieved with a delicious cake and congratulations.

Pictured here are some of the students who achieved one of their goals. Adryana Morales, Golf Junyanid, Mason Huber, Dimas Mendoza, Jordan Morgan.
