Portage Township parks may be closed and activities canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but park personnel are working hard to keep the community engaged and active during the stay-at-home order.
Park Superintendent Taylor O’Neal Long and Program Coordinator Jennifer Silkwood have launched two programs this month aimed at keeping both adults and children active.
Each day, at noon, virtual programming is posted on the Portage Township Trustee’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/portagetownship/
The content of the virtual programming ranges from activities adults and children can do at home, such as crafts or yoga, to virtual tours. No matter the activity, they’re fun and educational.
The township parks department is also providing a weekly Kids Craft Kit chock full of activities for youngsters. Included in the kits are coloring pages, crafts, word search puzzles and more. The kits are distributed each Monday to families receiving assistance through the Portage Township Food Pantry and on the township trustee’s Facebook page.
To add to the fun, parents are invited to post photos of their youngsters completing the crafts on the township’s Facebook page and to submit photos to the parks department to be entered into a contest.
