The Portage Parks Department has many upcoming events and classes this fall, something for everyone!
Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
Teams play 7 vs. 7 and can be all male, all female, or co-ed in this round robin tournament. Cost is $50 per team and the tournament will take place on Saturday, September 11 at 1:00pm at Imagination Glen. Please register by Tuesday, September 7 at Woodland Park. Rosters can be printed at www.ci.portage.in.us/parks. Winning team receives championship hoodies.
Portage City Auction
Come out to the city’s largest annual garage sale at Woodland Park on Saturday, September 11th. Item viewing begins at 8am and the auction begins at 10am. Admission is free to the public.
Something Blue Bridal Fair
Portage Parks & Recreation is partnering with Your Day, Your Way to bring you a bridal show on Sunday, September 12 from 2-6pm at Woodland Park. There will be a style show at 5pm. Admission is free to attend. Brides can pre-register online at www.yourdayyourwayweddingsandevents.com.
Ballroom Dance Classes
Ballroom dancing is an exciting and fun-filled activity that builds confidence and poise, provides a challenge and is a great way to be creative. Mary Chandler has been teaching ballroom dancing in northwest Indiana for many years. The next 6-week session begins Monday, September 13th. Beginner class begins at 7pm, intermediate at 8:15pm. Haunted Hayride Scenes Wanted!
Do you like to decorate for Halloween or even scare people? Gather your friends, family or club and construct a Halloween scene for our Haunted Hayrides! Your group will earn $150 for constructing a quality scene and the best scene could win as much as $250. Call 762-1675 for more information.
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
Come out to the Portage Community Theatre’s rendition of all 37 Shakespeare plays in 100 minutes! Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their way through every comedy, history and tragedy that Shakespeare ever wrote. Shows take place at the Portage Yacht Club on September 10, 11, 17, 18 at 8pm and on September 12 & 19 at 7pm. Cost is $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. Adult Yoga is being held at the Portage Yacht Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:45 p.m. Saturday Morning Yoga is being held at the Portage Lakefront Pavilion until September 25th and will be held at the Portage Yacht Club beginning October 2nd. Cost for ongoing classes is $30 per month for once/week attendance or $50 per month for unlimited attendance. All classes are for beginner/intermediate levels, adults age 18+. Tumbling Tuesdays
Children will learn the fundamentals of tumbling while developing balance, agility, and strength in a relaxed, fun environment. No tumbling experience required! Class is 6 weeks, September 14 – October 19 at the Portage Yacht Club. Ages 2-3 is from 5:00pm – 5:50pm. Ages 4-5 is from 6:00pm – 6:50pm. Ages 6+ is from 7:00pm – 7:50pm. Cost is $35 for residents, $40 for non-residents. Register at Woodland Park by September 13.
Strike Busters Youth Bowling
Children are invited to join us after school for this non-competitive afternoon of bowling. Bumper pads are available upon request. The next 6-week session begins Thursday, September 16 from 4:30pm – 5:30pm at Camelot Lanes. Register at Woodland Park by Wednesday, September 15. This program is for ages 4-12. Cost is $35/resident and $40/non-resident.
Adult Flag Football League
Outdoor flag football league featuring 8 games plus playoffs. Format is 8 vs. 8, on a 100-yard field with kickoffs, punts, field goals and USFTL rules. Upper and lower divisions. Season begins Sunday, September 26th. Games take place on Sundays between 9am – 4pm. Register by September 17. Games take place at Imagination Glen. League is for ages 17+. Under 18 requires parent signed release. Cost is $450 per team and an additional $25 fee if team is not already USFTL sanctioned.
Scrapbooking
Swap techniques and ideas with fellow scrappers. Bring your scrapbooks and supplies to put together albums, cards or any other paper crafts. Snacks and door prizes provided. Upcoming program dates are: Fridays – September 24, October 22, and November 19. The program will be held at Woodland Park from 6pm – 11pm. Cost for each session is $12 per person.
Babysitting with CPR option
Every parent wants a responsible babysitter. Learn how to choose safe toys, prevent injuries, be prepared to handle emergencies, perform first aid, change diapers, and how to market yourself. Please bring a sack lunch. Class is on Saturday, October 2nd from 8:30am – 4pm. Optional CPR class is on Sunday, October 3rd from 1-5pm. Cost is $45 for Saturday only and $75 for Saturday and Sunday CPR class. This class is for children age 11-15 and will be held at the Portage Yacht Club. Please register at Woodland Park.
Belly Dancing Workshop
Feel confident, sensual and beautiful! Come discover your exotic nature in this beginner-level workshop. Dress for fun. No experience necessary. The workshop takes place at the Portage Yacht Club on Friday, October 8th from 7pm – 8:30pm. Cost is $20 and the workshop is for ages 18+. Please register by October 7th.
Portage Community Market
The market is located at Founders’ Square Park, under the water tower on Central Ave. Items available for purchase include vegetables, breads, flowers and an array of crafts. Market hours are from 11am – 4pm on Sundays through October 10th.
Young Champions Youth Cheerleading
A fun course designed for making friends while learning choreographed pom-pom and dance routines. No experience needed. Visit www.ycusa.org. Course begins on Monday, October 11th. Ages 4-6 will be from 5:30pm – 6:15pm; Ages 7-9 will be from 6:15pm – 7:00pm; Ages 10-12 will be from 7pm – 7:45pm; Ages 13+ will be from 7:45pm – 8:30pm. Classes are held at Woodland Park. Women’s Volleyball League
B-Division plays on Tuesday nights and A-Division plays on Thursday nights. Teams play two 3-game matches per night and will be assigned matches to score. Season consists of 18-match schedule, followed by tournament, all of which are held at Woodland Park. Season begins October 12th. Teams must register by October 4th. Adult Dodgeball League
Teams play 6 v. 6 with a maximum of 10 players on the roster. Prizes may include champion t-shirts or entry into future sports leagues. This league is CO-ED! League takes place on Wednesday nights at Woodland Park, beginning October 13. Games are 8pm – 10pm. There will be an 18-match schedule followed by a double elimination tournament. Cost is $150 per team and players must be at least 15 years of age. Under 18 requires a signed release by parent. Register by Friday, October 8.
Hunter Safety Course
This class is designed to help prevent hunting accidents and to qualify participants to receive a license. You must attend both days. Classes are instructed by the Department of Natural Resources. The course will be held at the Portage Yacht Club on Friday, October 15 from 6-9pm and Saturday, October 16 from 9am-5pm. This is for all ages; children 12 and under must have an adult present to participate. Cost is $5 per person. Please register by October 14.
Adult Yoga Retreat
Treat yourself to a day of self-care. Basic gentle yoga stretches and breath techniques will be introduced. There will be a guided meditation and time for self reflection. Healthy snacks and tea will be provided. No experience is necessary. Bring a towel or mat to sit on and wear comfortable layers. Call 762-1675 ext. 305 for more info. This retreat is taking place on Sunday, October 17th from 10am – 3pm at the Portage Yacht Club. It is open to adult men and women and the cost is $35/each. Please register by October 15th.
Cornhole Tournament
On Friday, October 22nd at 6:00pm, we will be hosting a cornhole tournament at Woodland Park. Cost is $30 per team for 2 v. 2 double elimination. Tournament is for ages 18 & up. Register at Woodland Park before start of tournament. Winners receive 50% of entry fees, runners up receive 25%. Checks will be mailed third Thursday of following month. A cash bar will be available for those 21 & up.
Yoga Camp for Kids
Yoga teaches children to build their confidence and have a healthy self-esteem. Have your child bring a towel or yoga mat to practice on and wear comfortable clothing. Camp will be held at the Portage Yacht Club on Saturday, October 23rd from 11am – 1:30pm. This is for children ages 6-10 years. Cost is $12 per resident or $15 per non-resident. Taekwondo
Learn from a certified American Taekwondo Association instructor with 12+ years of teaching experience. Students will build confidence, self-esteem and life-skills. The next session is 4 weeks in length, twice per week on Tuesdays & Thursdays, beginning November 2 in the Blue Spruce Room at Woodland Park. Ages 3-5 will be from 4:00pm – 4:30pm and cost is $25 per resident, $30 per non-resident. Ages 6-12 will be from 4:40pm – 5:30pm. Ages 13+ will be from 5:40pm – 6:30pm. Co-ed Volleyball Tournament
There will be two divisions in this round-robin style tournament; A & B. Each division is limited to the first 6 teams to register. The tournament will take place on Sunday, November 7th at Woodland Park, with the first game beginning at noon. Teams must register by Tuesday, November 2nd. Youth Dodgeball
Come out for our afterschool dodgeball program. There will be an instructor on hand to explain the rules and help officiate matches. The 6-week program begins on Monday, November 8 from 4:30pm – 5:30pm at Woodland Park. This program is for ages 7-12. Cost is $20/resident, $25/non-resident
NBA Dribble, Dish & Swish
Compete against your friends to see who has the best basketball skills. Winners will move on to the regional competition for a chance to compete on a national stage at the NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by Adidas in Los Angeles, CA. Competition will take place on Wednesday, November 10th at 5:30pm at Woodland Park. This is for ages 7-12 and the cost is FREE.
Midweek Mountain Biking Madness
Meet others interested in the sport and get tips from experienced riders. No ride if trail is wet. Riders MUST wear helmets. This program takes place through the fall on Wednesday nights around 5pm at the Imagination Glen Outback Trailhead. Cost is FREE. For more info, visit www.outbacktrail.org
Friday Night Lights Mountain Biking
