Portage Mayor Sue Lynch Presents Jones Elementary with $500 Check and Mayor’s Cup Challenge Trophy

Portage Mayor Sue Lynch recently presented Jones Elementary with a check for $500 and the Mayor’s Cup Challenge Trophy for bringing the most runners to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana’s Little Igloo Race. The awards are part of the organization’s annual 5k Arctic Dash event, which brings runners from across Northwest Indiana each December and also serves as the final race in the Calumet Region Striders’ Gold Cup series.

The Little Igloo Race, sponsored by Centier Bank, is a mile-long run for kids held the same morning. Each year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana challenges local schools to bring the most students, and the winner receives both the check and the Mayor’s Cup Challenge Trophy, which it holds until the following year. Jones Elementary has held the title for three years running, capturing the trophy from previous winner, South Haven Elementary.

Mayor Lynch presented the check at a ceremony held inside the Jones Elementary gymnasium. Students and staff gathered with the mayor and posed for pictures.

“The Little Igloo Race is such a fun event for young runners throughout Northwest Indiana. The Jones kids were so excited to take their picture with the mayor and the trophy,” Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana’s Director of Marketing Stephanie Hamilton said.  “We really appreciate Mayor Lynch and all the schools that participated for being part of this fun run and encouraging youth to get out and get active.”
