Chamber members are invited to attend the Portage Kiwanis membership round-up that will be held next Tuesday, March 22, 2011. The club will be providing a buffet style breakfast beginning at 7:00 am at the Portage Holiday Inn Express meeting room. Attendees will gain knowledge of Kiwanis on a local, state, and international level.
Karen Roller, Asst. VP of regional development, of Riley Children’s Foundation will give a presentation on Riley Children’s Hospital. Indiana Kiwanians have been involved with Riley since the hospital was built in the 1920’s. Many local children use or have used the services at Riley. Kiwanis has raised money for Emergency Transport Vehicles, the helipad and the Simon Family Tower, to name a few projects.
Portage Kiwanians support many other organizations, such as, the Portage Food Pantry, Gabriel’s Horn and Jacob’s Ladder. The club has also been providing dictionaries to every PTS 3rd grader for the past 4 years. The club is credited for starting Relay for Life in Portage and Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April.) Currently, the club is planning a fundraiser which will be held in conjunction with the Easter Egg Hunt at Woodland Park on April 23rd. Proceeds from this event will provide the Myron Fessler scholarships to PTS graduating seniors.
Have you asked yourself what would make you happy today? Many of us would say, winning the lottery, buying a new car, getting a new house or if you are a parent of small children like me, a few extra hours of sleep. Not many of us would answer, the ability to help others. If you are one of those people, please consider joining us next Tuesday.
