English Class
The English 11 Advanced class, new this year to the English department’s course offerings, is a dual credit opportunity which is the first year of a two-year composition sequence. We have close to 50 students who are well on their way to earning their first college credit. Mr. Cavan and Mrs. Burke have developed a curriculum, aligned with Purdue University’s guidelines, that challenges students in the writing process, expository prose, and critical analysis of various types of American literature. Writing assignments include rhetorical analysis, problem/solution, narrative, description, response to literature, argumentative, persuasive, and research papers. Some projects have included public service announcements for problems in the Hoosier state and rhetorical analyses of music videos using the iPads along with the YouTube and iMovie applications. An upcoming opportunity will be for students to go on the Chicago Architectural Foundation’s The Devil in the White City tour that will enhance their reading of Erik Larson’s novel of the same name.
