Portage High School Students Recognized for Their Academic Accomplishments

PHS-Academic-Awards-2013-1Tuesday, May 14, juniors, seniors, and members of academic teams were recognized for their outstanding performance in their studies at the Academic Awards Night.

On this night, Portage High School students were acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to their academics and school work.

It meant the world to me to be acknowledged for this, because I worked so hard at getting good grades. I’m really proud of myself for lettering in academics; it’s an awesome feeling,” student Stefani Trajceski said.

PHS-Academic-Awards-2013-2Although the students and academic team members were the ones recognized, the teachers were also given a lot of credit as well.

I like Miss Castle, she is a great teacher, and Miss Nye is a fantastic social studies teacher. When I had her it was a great year. They are all great people and I’ve learned so much from them and I can’t credit all of my educators enough for everything they’ve taught me,” student James Podgorski said.

Science Olympiad Coach Heather Castle has been leading the academic team to new heights for the past seven years. The fact that Castle was on her academic team during her high school career influenced her to coach the team.

PHS-Academic-Awards-2013-3I try my best to support the team and just be there for them if they don’t do so well. It’s important to encourage them overall,” Castle said.

Each student was announced individually for their academic accomplishments.

I think it’s wonderful that students get the opportunity to be recognized on this awards night because so often you do the academics because you want to, not for the recognition, and it’s really nice to get the public recognition,” teacher Elizabeth Gilfillan said.
