Portage High School’s Work Based Learning Students Participate in “The Hour of Code”

Portage_High_Schools_Work_Based_Learnin-1Portage High Schools Work Based Learning Class participated in the largest learning event in history this week. This global movement taking place during Computer Education Week, which is December 8-14, is designed to fix the diversity gap in computer science. Last year half of the participants were girls, 8% black and 14% Hispanic. President Obama kicked off the activity in the GQE lab with a video message.

At first the student's found the computer programing challenging, but after the first couple of activities they were excited about learning. I'm hoping that the students keep learning with the activities available from KHANACADEMY. Code Studio Courses and apps are available with options to create interactive games, stories or apps. One poster available to promote the movement includes the message, "Don't just play on your phone, program it." by President Barack Obama. I think this statement says it all.
